How to fill the template · copy instructions for your AI

Keep the DATA headers. Add one row per item and period, with numeric values. Keep the same unit throughout.
Use years, months, quarters or ISO dates. Leave missing values blank; enter 0 only for a real zero.
Add data and image sources in Sources. Save as .xlsx, upload it above, then choose Make a chart. If several source URLs are found, choose the data source to display. Check the title, unit and source name in Make.

Use the image file address, not a webpage or an Excel IMAGE() formula. Image hosts must allow access for exports. If a host blocks your image, upload it in Make → Chart → item images.

Use the attached blank Excel template. Create exactly two worksheets named DATA and Sources. Keep the header in row 1, without a title or merged cells above it.

DATA worksheet contract:
- Use long format with this exact header row, in this order:
  item_id,item,group,period,value,color_value,logo_url
- Write one observation per row. Every item_id + period pair must be unique.
- Keep item_id, item, and group stable across periods. item is the displayed name; group is optional.
- For countries, use ISO3 in item_id (USA, KOR, JPN). Chartlapse supplies the flags automatically when logo_url is blank.
- Preserve the original reporting frequency. Use numeric years (2020), or text periods YYYY-MM, YYYY-Q1 to YYYY-Q4, or YYYY-MM-DD. Do not mix frequencies or turn monthly/daily observations into annual values. For an undated snapshot, remove the period column. One dated period makes a still chart; animation needs at least two periods.
- Store value as finite numeric spreadsheet cells. Preserve genuine negative values (use a Line chart); area charts need non-negative values. Do not replace negatives with zero.
- For color_value, either leave the entire column blank or populate every DATA row with a finite numeric spreadsheet cell.
- For a custom icon or logo, put a direct, publicly accessible HTTPS image URL in logo_url, repeated for that item across periods. PNG, JPG, WebP and SVG are suitable. Use the image file URL, not a webpage, search-result link, Excel IMAGE() formula or image pasted into a cell. A custom URL takes priority over the built-in flag. Leave this column blank when no image is needed.
- Prefer stable image URLs that allow cross-origin access so images can be included in exports. If the host blocks access, the user can upload the image in Chartlapse's Make step. Record the image source and its license in Sources. Never invent an image URL.

Sources worksheet contract:
- Use this exact header row, in this order:
  publisher,dataset_title,source_url,accessed_at,license,unit,time_range,transformations,missing_data_policy
- Add one row per data or image source and document every transformation, unit conversion, filter, aggregation, and missing-data decision.
- Use a direct source URL and an ISO 8601 accessed_at date.

Accuracy rules:
- Use authoritative primary sources only. First confirm geography, entity definitions, measurement unit and available periods. For car sales, distinguish manufacturer groups from brands, sales from production, and country sales from global sales.
- Never invent, estimate, interpolate, extrapolate, or silently fill a value.
- Distinguish missing observations from real zeroes: leave a missing value blank, and write 0 only when the primary source explicitly reports zero. Keep verified observations for the same item and document gaps in missing_data_policy. Chartlapse will ask the user how to handle gaps.
- If the requested range is unavailable, report the available coverage and gaps. Do not silently shorten the request or claim complete coverage. If no observations can be verified, explain why instead of fabricating a workbook.
- Preserve the source's unit unless a transformation is explicitly documented.
- Check unique item/period keys, consistent units and numeric cell types before returning the workbook.

Return the completed .xlsx file and a short statement of actual coverage. The user will review it and upload it to Chartlapse. A single source_url can be attached automatically; multiple source URLs require the user to choose the data source to display. The user checks the title, unit and source name in Make.
